Setup

MichLTC was invited to display a layout for Northville Michigan Celebrate the 8’s on 8-8-2008. I arrived soon after the Leach family arrived on the morning of 8-8-2008. The tables were provided by them so we didn’t have to put up any tables. The 6 x 13 foot display was put up in about two hours. Chris designed the layout and all buildings were Chris’s in this small layout. Chris displayed his expanded Café Corner for the first time in a display. I spent three days prior to the show building the train engine with the &qout;8 8 8″ on it and several hoppers filled with coal. Chris Leach’s 1001 Woodward rounded out the city display.

A Minor Mishap

During setup Chris’s son bumped the Pepsi building and damaged it. Chris quickly got it back together and placed it in the display as I and his family finished putting up the final details of the display. No one noticed until my wife arrived and pointed out the spelling on the building read PEPEI. Just two bricks out of place, makes a big difference.

The Show

The show went quite well. As the first group of people came out of the gym, they were quite surprised to see the display fully set up since there was no display when they went in. Several groups of kids came by the display; as soon one group left the gym, another group would enter for another event being held there. All the kids seemed to love the giant LEGO man walking in the city. Chris’s daughter, Kira, was playing a game with the kids, having them find items in the display. The kids seemed to enjoy that.

Teardown

The show went so quick that Chris was trying to find a way to leave the display up until Sunday so more people could enjoy it, but we decided the take it down as planed because the hall was rented out for an evening party and the building was going to be open all day. Teardown took about an hour and a half including loading up the van. Loading was not without incident, because a large part of Chris’s 1001 Woodward building was dropped in the grass outside.
