Report by David Kohrman
As part of Kalamazoo's New Years Fest activities the three area Michlugers set up a small display at First Baptist Church, one of the festival event sites. With only a few days for planning things were hairy enough. David getting sick the day before, while in Chicago only complicated matters. Still he was able to limp to the Church shortly after 1:00 while Stefan and Andrew had arrived around noon.
The setup was positioned against the double doors of the Founders Room utilizing 4 8 foot by 30 inch tables provided by the Church. A small 4 block town layout with a train loop was setup on 3 of the tables and Stefan and Andrew provided space models for the 4th table.
A number of old and new creations were included in this display. David filled three blocks with his historic Kalamazoo buildings and a new sand green house. Andrew filled a block of town buildings while Stefan unveiled an improved version of his Burlington Zephyr streamliner. New Years Fest kicked off at 5:30 allowing plenty of time to set up.
Andrew left shortly after the Fest began while David and Stefan continued the man the layout. The one thing on the mind of Kalamazoo was "How long did it take?". Never had David or Stefan heard that question so often, in so little amount of time. David's model of the Orrin B. Hayes dealership and Stefan's Zephyr did their job as a few people recognized them. Unfortunately there were no 80 year olds who remembered the Kalamazoo Courthouse.
People trickled by throughout the evening with most of the crowds coming between events upstairs. Should this display be repeated next year with more advanced warning (ie: more then 6 days) and advertising, it could be very high profile. Circumstances as they were, things turned out nicely.
We locked up the display at 10:00. Stefan had to get to an event and David's stomach felt like it was full of razor blades. Stefan took his and Andrews creations home while David kept his portion of the display up. The layout remained up until Sunday with a Santa Fe in place of Stefan's Zephyr for the benefit of the church congregation who enjoyed it very much.
This report brought to you by David Kohrman and a can of Vernors.
