Show Report:by James GarrettMichLTC was asked by representatives of the Max M Fisher Music Center in Detroit, MI. to display a train layout in conjunction with the "Home for the Holidays' Christmas pops concerts played by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in Orchestral Hall. Chris Leach designed a modestly sized 5x15 foot layout that nevertheless features some of our best Lego creations. Particularly noteworthy was the debut of Chris' new elevated Detroit People Mover. Also making an appearance was my David Stott and IBM buildings, Peter's art deco Bus Terminal and People Mover station, Chris' venerable Pepsi Building plus both old and new tan office towers, and Peter's MacDonalds. We had better recognition by visitors of our structures (and People Mover) than is usual but that did not prevent several people asking if the Pepsi Building was a rendition of the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) or if the tall building was the Penobscot. As a side benifit MichLUG members received concert tickets for themselves and immediate family. The concert, performed in the acoustically magnificent Orchestra Hall featured a variety of Christmas music including carols, music from Charlie Brown's Christmas, and a musically accompanied reading of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The MichLUG train display was very popular before and after the concerts as well as intermission, with people lined up three-deep around the layout. |
